In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Underway
In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
