Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
